(Nov. 12, 2008) -- Recently re-elected State Senator Alan Lowenthal (D., LB-Paramount) and exiting Assemblywoman Betty Karnette (D., LB) are among 44 Sacramento Democrats who joined in filing a nine-page "Friend of the Court" letter/brief with the CA Supreme Court, urging the High Court to overturn Proposition 8 (which ended same sex marriage in CA).

Prop 8 reversed a CA Supreme Court ruling (4-3) that made same sex marriage a state constitutional right. It was approved by CA voters on November 4 by a margin of roughly 52.3% to 47.7%.

Proposition 8 passed in five of nine LB Council districts (5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) but didn't get a majority of votes citywide due mainly to its 2 to 1 defeat in the 2nd Council district with 69% "no" votes, plus a large number of "no" votes in the 3rd Council district.
