(October 23, 2001) -- In a brazen "walk up" murder, a 19 year old LBCC student -- the son of Cambodian immigrants who left southeast asia's killing fields -- was fatally shot in his car in a driveway in the 1000 block of Hoffman Ave. (between Cherry and Orange) while visiting friends in LB's 2d Council district.
A 18 year old passenger in his car, also an LBCC student, was also shot and remains hospitalized.
LBPD says a suspect approached 19 year old Sophy Ouk and his passenger, 18 year old So Phay Chum, as they pulled into a driveway. The suspect shot both teens in the head, police say. Sophy Ouk was mortally wounded, transported to a local hospital by LBFD and died of his wounds. So Phay Chum remains hospitalized.
Police describe the suspect as a male Hispanic in his 20's with a shaved head and a moustache, approximately 5'9" tall with medium build. He was wearing a tan button-up shirt and khaki pants.
LBPD urges anyone with information about this crime to contact Homicide Detectives Steven Smith or Hector Nieves at (562) 570-7244.
