How LB Voted -- By Council District -- On Gov. Recall & Replacements

(Oct. 13, 2003) -- LBReport.com posts below detailed data from the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder's office -- broken down by Council districts -- showing how LB voted in the Oct. 7 recall/special election.

Citywide, 51.9% of LB voters supported recalling Gov. Gray Davis. ELB Council districts favored the recall in large numbers. The 5th Council district voted for the recall by 64.85%. The 3d Council district -- with the largest number of registered voters and largest number of ballots cast -- voted for the recall by 57%. And in the 4th Council district (fourth in number of ballots cast) 53.6% voted for the recall.

In LB's six other Council districts -- 1st, 2d, 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th -- a majority of those voting opposed the recall...although the number of registered voters, and number of those voting, was smaller than on LB's eastside. (Exception: the 7th district had fewer registered voters than the 4th but a higher percentage voted.)

And "No" votes on the recall from LB did not translate into votes for Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante...who campaigned on the theme "No on the Recall, Yes on Bustamante." In all six Council districts that voted against the recall, the number of "No" votes on the recall was larger than the number of votes for Bustamante.

And in the 7th and 8th Council districts -- where a majority voted against the recall -- the number of votes for Arnold Schwarzenegger exceeded those for Bustamante.

Also of note, Larry Flynt got 195 votes for Governor in LB.

ELB satellite project manager Michael Jackson received 5 votes in LB. "When I saw how the election was going in favor of Schwarzenegger, I decided against doing much campaigning in LB, so as not to unnecessarily antagonize Republicans," said Mr. Jackson, who (as previously reported by LBReport.com) plans to seek the 27th district state Senate seat in 2004.

Mr. Jackson added, "I had people who were committed to voting for me say that after the attacks on Mr. Schwarzenegger in the last few days before the election, they were prompted to vote for him, which is understandable. We couldn't afford either Davis or Bustamante."

For comparison purposes, voters in nearby Lakewood (citywide) favored the recall by 66.4%. In Cerritos, 59.7% voted for the recall.

Prop 54, the racial privacy initiative, failed in all LB City Council districts.
