(September 6, 2005) -- At about 3:30 p.m. on Labor Day September 5, LBPD gang detectives made a traffic stop in the area of PCH/Maine when the passenger ran, prompting a foot pursuit during which the suspect allegedly presented a handgun.
LBPD says in a written release that one of the detectives, fearing for his safety and his partner's safety, fired at the suspect, striking him one in the leg.
The suspect, a 26 year-old Whittier resident, was transported to a local hospital, treated for his injury...and booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer. Police say they recovered the suspect's weapon from the scene.
The driver of the vehicle did stop...and was not taken into custody.
Following standard procedure, LBPD's Homicide Detail and the L.A. County D.A. will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
