(Sept. 26, 2005) -- An officer-involved shooting took place overnight near the entrance to LB Airport.
Details are sketchy as we post. LBPD says that at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday night (Sept. 25), Airport Security officers [not formally LBPD, Airport Security officers have their own uniforms and chain of command and fewer powers than LBPD officers] responded to a call of a suspicious man loitering near LB Airport, reported by a party to be hiding and preparing to commit a crime.
The Airport Security officers spotted the man in the parking lot of the gas station at Lakewood Blvd. @ Wardlow Rd. where he allegedly pointed a gun at the officers and began shooting.
The officers shot the suspect multiple times in his extremities and torso. He's described as a 27 year-old LB resident (name withheld pending notification of next of kin). LBFD transported him to a hospital. LBPD says he's facing charges including attempted murder of police officers and weapons violations.
Further to follow as newsworthy.
