Murder on day before "Grand Prix" comes less than a half hour after a man is shot area Del Amo Blvd/Locust Ave.)

(UPDATE: April 21, 2013, 12:10 p.m.) -- LBPD has issued a release providing significant additional information regarding the fatal shooting LBREPORT.com reported earlier today.

Officers were in the area of Locust Ave./Home Ave. investigating an unrelated shooting just minutes earlier when a vehicle driven by a female and containing a male gunshot victim drove up to them and "due to the grave condition of the victim, officers immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased."

LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt confirms to LBREPORT.com that the unrelated incident that officers were investigating was a non-fatal shooting minutes earlier in the area of Locust and Home Aves.

We also learn that the victim in last night's fatal shooting was Jamal Lindsey, 18, of Long Beach...and LBPD has taken a suspect into custody: Derome Harper, 20, was taken into custody.

[LBPD release text] On Saturday, April 20, 2013, at approximately 9:10 p.m., a shooting occurred in the 1200 block of Phillips Street that resulted in the death of a male adult.

Officers were in the area of Locust Avenue and Home Street investigating an unrelated incident when a vehicle being driven by a female and containing a male gunshot victim drove up to them. Due to the grave condition of the victim, officers immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and a male acquaintance were involved in a dispute in the 1200 block of Phillips Street. When the victim got into a vehicle to leave the location, the male acquaintance fired at the victim, striking him multiple times in the upper torso.

A female then got into the vehicle and attempted to drive the victim, identified as 18-year-old Jamal Lindsey of Long Beach, to the hospital, when she came across officers at the other location and stopped for help.

The investigation led police to a residence in the 1200 block of Phillips Street, where 20-year-old Derome Harper was taken into custody. He has been booked for murder and is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Malcolm Evans and Todd Johnson at (562) 570-7244. (April 21, 2013, 5:50 a.m.) -- As first flashed on LBREPORT.com's front page last night, two shootings occurred in Long Beach last night (April 20, the day before the "Long Beach Grand Prix") within half an hour of each other. In one shooting, the victim died (details below); in the other shooting (coverage ccoming), the victim suffered what appeared to be non-life-threatening wounds.

Red X's = murders 2011 to date; Blue X's = non-fatal shootings (of which we become aware) Aug. 2, 2011 to date. On Sept. 6, 2011, six Councilmembers -- Garcia, Lowenthal, DeLong, O'Donnell, Andrews, Johnson -- approved a third year of police budget cuts proposed by Mayor Foster and City Manager West (approved over dissents of Councilmembers Schipske, Neal and Gabelich)

In very early midnight hour information, LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt says that at about 9:10 p.m. on April 20., officers responded to the 1200 block of Phillips Street regarding a shots call in which a man (adult) was struck by gunfire. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

There was no suspect information immediately available and LBPD is investigating what took place as possibly gang related.

It was unknown as of the midnight hour whether this shooting is related to a shooting that occurred about a half hour earlier in the area of Del Amo Blvd./Locust Ave...which is part of LBPD's ongoing investigation.

Last night's two shootings come just under two weeks after an April 7 multiple victim shooting in the area (300 block of E. Home St., about two blocks north of Del Amo near Locust in which a male victim died (LBREPORT.com coverage here).

And just weeks earlier on Mar 22 in the area of Del Amo Blvd./LB Blvd., a 10 year old boy was hit by gunfire while sitting next to his parents inside their vehicle while at a gas station (LBREPORT.com coverage here and here).

The NLB shootings come nine days after after a man was shot to death (April 11) near downtown in the area of 7th/Alamitos/MLK Ave. on the border of the 1st (Garcia) and 2nd (Lowenthal) Council districts (coverage here).

On April 15, a man was shot and survived in the 1400 block of Cherry Ave. at the western end of the 4th Council district (coverage here)

LBPD asks anyone with information about what took place on the evening of April 20 to contact its Gang Enforcement Detail at (562) 570-7370. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
