(Nov. 5, 2020, 8:15 p.m.) -- At dusk today (Nov,.5) gunfire raked the neighborhood just blocks due north of LB's new Civic Center adjoining the heart of downtown Long Beach. Three persons -- two of whom are juveniles -- were shot and wounded.
In preliminary information, LBPD Public Information Officer Allison Gallagher says that at about 4:40 p.m., officers responded to a persons-hit shooting in the 700 block of Chestnut Ave. and found three persons hit, two of whom were juveniles.
"The preliminary investigation suggests that the victims were standing outside on a sidewalk when an unknown suspect opened fire," PIO Gallagher says.
It's the most recent shooting in LB's 1st Council district, represented since Dec. 2019 by Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, who took office following a no-runoff special election supportd by Mayor Robert Garcia, immediate past CD 1 incumbent (now state Senator) Lena Gonzalez and the LB Police Officers union (LBPOA PAC.)
LNPD PIO Gallagher says "We have patrols in the area and will continue to have a heavy police presence."
Councilwoman Zendejas was among LB Councilmembers who urged defunding 48 more officers in Sept. 2020 (on top of 180+ defunded in budgets approved by then CD1 Councilman Robert Garcia from 2009-2014) and not restored despite LB voters' approval of the 2016 "Measure A" sales tax.
Since June 1, 2020, residents and businesses in LB's mainly working class 1st Council district have experiencded the highest number of shootings of any LB Council district. .
