(Oct. 7, 2019, 10:50 a.m.) -- Less than 24 hours after LBPD learned a woman was shot/critically injured in NW NLB's "Coolidge Triangle" (area 65th St. south of Artesia Blvd.), an 18 year-old Compton man was shot/killed in the 100 block of 69th Way in NW NLB (north of Artesia Blvd.)
It's the fifth shooting crime scene in NW NLB since mid-June...and in a release LBPD says "in response to this incident, additional officers have been deployed to the immediate area."
In a release, LBPD states:
On October 6, 2019 at approximately 7:10 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of W. 69th Way regarding reports of gunshots heard in the area, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male adult victim laying on the east sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Responding officers immediately began performing life-saving measures on the victim until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived. Long Beach Fire personnel also attempted life-saving measures, but subsequently determined the victim deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking northwest across the intersection of 69th Way and Muriel Ave. when multiple suspects approached the victim on foot and fired multiple shots toward the victim, striking him in the upper torso.
The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Eronald Deas of Compton.
The motive for the shooting and description of the suspects is currently unknown. Detectives are actively working to gather additional information to further the investigation.
In response to this incident, additional officers have been deployed to the immediate area.

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, following recommendations by then-Mayor Bob Foster, the LB City Council (which included then-Councilman Robert Garcia) erased over a period of years starting in 2009 (entering FY10) 208 budgeted citywide deployable police officers (over 20% of LB's citywide deployable level) including the elimination of LBPD's field anti-gang unit.
Under Mayor Garcia, despite LB voter approval of a June 2016 sales tax increase ("Measure A") now bringing City Hall over $50 million more annually, LB's current City Council has restored only 22 of the budget-erased officers, leaving LB without 186 officers (including a field anti-gang unit) that it previously had but no longer has.
